Who we are

Our Community Heart

Simone’s Laundry is built on a simple belief inspired by Simone Weil: that real care begins with attentive presence — noticing where people are stretched thin and offering practical support. For every ten paid washes, we provide a free or reduced-cost wash to someone in our community who’s struggling, whether that’s a family under pressure, new parents, or someone going through a hard season. We partner with local schools, charities, churches, and community organisations who know their people best, so they help us identify households that could benefit — allowing us to serve without judgement or gatekeeping. Laundry may be small, but the time and breathing room it gives back can make a real difference. Through every load, we hope to create a quiet network of care woven through our local area.

Simone who?

Simone Weil (1909–1943) was a French philosopher, activist, and mystic whose life revolved around attention, compassion, and solidarity with those who carry heavy burdens. She believed that the first act of love is truly seeing another person — noticing their pressures, their limits, and their dignity. Her writing on “attention” as a form of care has shaped the heart of our work. Simone’s Laundry is named in her honour because we believe that even something as ordinary as washing clothes can become an act of presence: a way of giving someone a little space, time, and relief when life is demanding more than they can give. Through this small, practical service, we try to embody the kind of attentive kindness Weil devoted her short life to.
